Proven 3-Step System for Auditors to Find a Job Overseas

Let me tell you a quick story – Siphiwe hails from a rural part of South Africa. He attended a farm school that had an educational standard well below the likes of the average public schools in the cities. 

He walked to and from school in the heat up to 3 hours a day. He studied by candlelight in a crowded shack with his siblings and family all around him. His parents were poor and struggled to pay for his education. Fortunately, he was able to attend the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal as he obtained a bursary. He chose to study accounting.
 
Despite all his hardship, Siphiwe qualified with a B.Com Degree in Accounting and served his articles at a local audit firm in Durban. Seeing so many other South Africans find jobs overseas and prosper, he was determined to get out himself. He dreamed of working in the UK or US. 

He spent months applying for various accounting and audit roles (in the US & UK) on LinkedIn and other online job sites. He must have applied for over a thousand jobs and still wasn't able to land a single interview. He found a few international recruitment agents on LinkedIn hoping they would be able to help him. They never got back to him and some totally ignored him. 

After almost a year of trying and zero luck, Siphiwe was about to give up on this dream and move to Johannesburg instead. Despite all the hardship and obstacles he had to overcome throughout his life, getting out of South Africa seemed to be the most challenging. 

One night as he was scrolling on LinkedIn, he came across my profile and was intrigued as I had worked in multiple countries. Siphiwe reached out to me and I shared the strategies that I have used to work in Boston, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore. 

Siphiwe immediately implemented these strategies and 3 months later secured a job and was on a one-way flight to London to begin a new chapter of his life. Siphiwe later told me that he shared these strategies with some of his friends and they have been able to emigrate to the UK, Australia, Amsterdam and Ireland. 

Fast forward to today- Siphewe is a Manager in the FP&A team at a multi-national in London. Like myself and many others, he leveraged his Auditing experience to get him a job in a new country, to immerse himself into the business culture and build his network. After that, he started looking for new jobs (and using my strategies again), he was able to get out of audit.

Do you need to be a Chartered Accountant to get a job overseas?

No! First, let me make it clear that South Africa hypes the CA qualification. I have traveled around the world and worked in multiple countries and this is what I found:
  • Big 4 Audit firms in US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore hire non-accounting graduates and train them in-house. Whereas in SA, you need to pass the Accounting Honours to get into a Big4.
  • ​To become an audit manager in SA, you need to qualify as a CA(SA). Whereas you can become an Audit Manager and even a Director in a Big 4 in other countries without having a professional qualification (however you will not be able to sign audit reports).
  • In other countries, work experience holds more weight and is more important than your qualification. 
So even if you're not a CA, its your audit experience (which is the same worldwide) which you can leverage to find a job abroad. 

Why is the Proven 3-Step Job System so successful?

As illustrated in the image above, (and as Siphiwe did in the beginning), most people search for jobs online or via recruiters. 

Unbeknown to Siphiwe, he was one of a vast number of auditors/accountants with exactly the same experience applying for the same limited number of advertised jobs! And he was competing against millions of others from India, China and the rest of the world. His resume was lost in a sea of resumes and it's no wonder he was never called.

However, the Proven 3-Step Job System enabled Siphiwe to stand apart and get noticed.

Furthermore, it allowed Siphiwe to apply for Jobs that others didn't even know existed! As such, Siphiwe faced no competition!

What most people don’t know is that over 80% of available jobs in the market are not even advertised – This is the hidden job market (see image below).

So How Do You Access the Hidden Job Market?

Via The Referral Method!

By using the Referral Method, you avoid competing with the masses and significantly increase your chances of landing job interviews. Only 20% of job-seekers are savvy enough to use the Referral Method.

The Referral Method is an age-old method and has been around before job portals and recruitment agents. Referrals work because of basic human psychology, trust and a concept called social proof.

Say you are looking to hire a domestic helper or a nanny. Would you randomly pick someone from the newspaper or are you more likely to trust someone a friend vouches for and recommends to you.

Integrity and ethics are very important to Company Executives when hiring, as such they are more likely to be comfortable hiring you when someone internally that they trust vouches for you and refers you for the job.

The Referral Method is the foundation and the Proven 3-Step Job System builds on top of this, laying out a step-by-step guide on how to successfully get a job referral.
